Freight rates are moving again, but container purchase and leasing prices remain firm.
Drewry’s World Container Index rose 3% to $4,485 per FEU in Week 43, led by gains on European routes, while transpacific routes showed mixed results. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index also increased for a second consecutive week.
Equipment prices have followed a different pattern. New and used containers, along with container leasing rates, have not softened in line with earlier freight-rate declines. CIMC reported production bookings extending into November and month-on-month improvements in new-container prices. Meanwhile, the HARPEX containership charter index remained elevated—an indicator of vessel charter conditions, rather than container leasing costs.
What Is Supporting Container Prices?
HYSUN sees three main factors: port congestion, uneven empty-container availability and higher manufacturing costs.
Industry estimates suggest congestion is absorbing around 12% of global container shipping capacity. Delays in returning empty containers can leave individual ports short of equipment, even when boxes are available elsewhere. Rising steel and other input costs add further pressure on new-container prices.
Within China, domestic demand varies by region, while export activity is gradually recovering after the holiday period.
Freight rates can change quickly as booking demand and market expectations shift. Container prices also depend on factory schedules and whether the right equipment is available at the required pickup location. A fall in freight rates therefore does not necessarily mean cheaper containers.
What This Means for Buyers
HYSUN expects limited near-term room for container prices to fall unless equipment availability improves.
For shipments with confirmed schedules, arranging containers 7–15 days in advance may help reduce last-minute sourcing risks. Buyers should also monitor whether announced late-October freight increases take effect and check 40HC availability early on busy routes.
